Aspetos interdisciplinares e linguísticos na construção da identidade madeirense

Abstract

Este estudo propõe uma reflexão sobre a interface língua/identidade aplicada ao conceito de insularidade, enquanto espaço de fronteira, híbrido por natureza. Procura-se, numa perspetiva interdisciplinar, observar de que modo esta configuração poderia estar envolvida na memória coletiva e na vida social das sociedades insulares, contribuindo para a sua construção identitária, um processo também ele dinâmico de uma formulação do “eu” por contraste com o “outro”. Os usos linguísticos, enquanto práticas sociais, serão tomados como indicadores privilegiados neste processo, tendo por referência a ilha da Madeira e alguns fenómenos linguísticos da variedade nela falada do português europeu (PE) e tidos como salientes, quando comparados com outras variedades continentais do PE. As particularidades linguísticas regionais serão analisadas do ponto de vista do seu valor simbólico, enquanto índices madeirenses, ou de pertença a uma região.

This study proposes a reflection on the language/identity interface applied to the concept of insularity, as border space, hybrid by nature. Through an interdisciplinary perspective, one seeks to observe how this configuration could be involved in the collective memory and social life of island societies, contributing to the construction of identity, a dynamic process of the formulation of the “I” in contrast with the “other”. Uses of language as social practices will be taken as key indicators in this process with reference to Madeira Island and some linguistic phenomena of the variety of European Portuguese (E.P.) spoken on this island that are regarded as salient when compared with other E.P. continental varieties. Regional linguistic features will be analyzed from the point of view of their symbolic value, as Madeiran indices, or belonging to a region.
